King of the Hill (commonly abbreviated to KOTH) is a gametype available on the Minigames server. The objective of this game is to maintain control over a control point for longer than the other team. Games are a total of 15 minutes long, and begin when at least one player is present on all teams.

Mechanic

On every map is a control point, consisting of a beacon and a stained glass on top of it. Most maps have the control point on top of a raised structure in the center of the map.

An uncontrolled point will have a white stained glass block on top of the beacon, and the beacon beam will be white. When controlled by the red team, the stained glass and beacon beam are red; when controlled by the blue team, the glass and beam are blue.

A player seeking to capture the control point for their team when it is not under the player team's control does so by clicking on either the beacon or the stained glass block above it. A progress bar will appear at the top of the screen for all players (including spectators) visually showing the time left for the specified team to capture the point, while an audio cue will count down the time. For a successful capture, the following two conditions must be met:

  • At least one player from the capturing team must stay close to the beacon and stained glass (distance required unknown...?)
  • No one on the team currently controlling the point hits the beacon/stained glass during the countdown. Doing so will result in another audio cue and the interruption of capture - the capturing team must hit the beacon/stained glass to try capturing the point again.

When the point is captured, the capturing team will gain a point on the scoreboard, and the stained glass and beacon beam will change to the color of the team that captured the point.

Teams accrue points based on how long they hold the point - one point is awarded for point capture, and one additional point is gained for every minute that the point remains under the team's control. At the end of the game, the team in control of the control point gains another point. (There is a bug where the additional points do not show on the scoreboard, but the final winner announcement takes them into account.)

The winner is the team that has the most points when time is called.

General Strategies

  • Defend the point once your team captures it! Your team wins based on how long the point is under your team's control. Hit the beacon/stained glass if you are on the point and the other team is trying to capture it.
  • Points that are on a raised structure or hill are generally easier to defend, due to the superior visibility of the map at the point as well as the high ground for bow combat. Use the terrain to your advantage.
  • Use knockback to keep players physically away from the point. A point on raised ground will make this easier, as knocking opponents off a hill can also force them to take fall damage at the same time. Remember that sprinting while hitting someone with a melee attack will deal additional knockback, and that this effect will stack with that of any knockback enchants on the sword.
  • Shooting players on the point from the other team might be a good way to clear the point, but remember that capturing the point requires that at least one player on your team reaches the point.
