2022 Fundraiser
Server version: 1.18.1

Location: event.nerd.nu / e.nerd.nu
Dates: September 30 - October 2, 2022 |
Donations
Many games and servers offer things like paid loot boxes to give the player buying them an advantage over everyone else. Some allow special ranks, privileges, or even staff positions to be purchased as well. Though our servers and gamemodes may have changed over the past 11 years, the core idea of Nerd.nu has not: that all players should be treated fairly and equally. Anyone can join our servers for the first time, without giving us a cent, and have the same experience as someone who’s been around for years and donated hundreds of dollars.
The hardware our servers run on does cost money, so once a year we hold a fundraiser to help pay for the next year’s costs. As is tradition, we will be donating 50% of the proceeds (before PayPal fees) to Child's Play. This charity provides toys, video games, and more to children in hospitals worldwide. If you are able to contribute, and believe that we have earned it, we greatly appreciate any amount you give. If you are not able to contribute, don’t worry about it! Just have fun at the event. Either way, visit https://nerd.nu/donate/ to see how much has been donated so far, and maybe make a donation of your own!

The Lost Flying City
Centuries ago, there was a civilization so advanced that they developed nanotechnology. According to legend, they could use their nanites to create buildings, armor, potions, and many other such wonders. According to fragments of drawings from other civilizations of the time, they even built a city that flew through the air! But one fateful day, the city vanished. Your research team used to believe that the ancient city ascended into the stars, but recent satellite imagery has revealed a very promising crater...
Your mission, dear researchers, is to explore the crash site and its surrounding environment. Do those fabled nanites still exist? With their help, and enough materials, you may be able to rebuild the ancient city block for block, building by building, and unlock its many technologies.
Getting Started
You will spawn at the center of the ruins. Thanks to the nanites' primary desire to keep producing and reproducing, they have remained somewhat active after all these centuries. They have permeated the whole land, as well as its resident monsters. Many blocks, when broken, will drop Nanite Substrate, the main currency for the event. Nanites can also be obtained by killing monsters, or as rewards for completing certain challenges. The city nanites have held on for long enough to maintain the defense shield that keeps out the mobs, but are currently too weak to do much more. They have concentrated a few of the city's basic systems (such as leather armor and basic food) into a worn-out hut, but they require more materials before they can truly thrive.
Rebuilding the Skyscrapers
This document lists the rebuilding costs for each skyscraper in the city, as well as a brief description of what they unlock. Each ruined building contains a donation barrel out front. All buildings will require some amount of Nanite Substrate, along with an assortment of other items (Nanite Prices subject to change to maintain the pace of the event). When all of the required materials are placed in the barrel, make a /modreq, sit back, and watch the nanites do their work. The city may not be able to fly again, but it can still be reassembled into something beautiful.
Warp Pads
There are 5 warp pads scattered throughout the completed city. When the building containing a warp pad is rebuilt, the pad will allow teleportation between itself and the city center. They're a convenient way to move from one end of the city to the other without the use of Sprinter's Boots.
A Missing Tower?
There is a rather curious gap in ruins in the city center - perhaps one of the city's building repair systems was shaken loose during the crash? Could there be a missing building out in the wilderness, just waiting to be repaired? Could there be any other ruins out there that we can restore?
Monsters
You will notice that many of the monsters beyond the crater's edge are significantly more challenging than the ones you're used to. Many of them will move faster, hit harder, and have at least twice as much health as their vanilla cousins. A few will have fun and exciting abilities! Consider the server difficulty to be extra hard. Some monsters may drop sand, which will help you supply the nanites with important building resources.
Upgrades
This document will be updated to show all of the items and effects that are available to you as their respective buildings are unlocked.
Armor
The ruined city's nanites are capable of producing armor with very helpful bonuses, but all of them come with a cost. For example, you may get more damage at the cost of slower movement speed, or extra Armor Toughness (which helps you survive large single attacks) at the expense of lower maximum health. Every piece of armor is free, but all of them are cursed with both Binding and Vanishing, so you may not take them off or keep them after death.
At first, only one set of enhanced armor will be available at Spawn. The Armory, when repaired, will offer signs with three options for each piece of armor, with increasing bonuses for each armor tier (Leather, Iron, Diamond, Netherite). When you click an armor sign, be sure that the slot you want to armor up is empty, for it will be placed directly in that slot. If you want a new helmet, but are already wearing a nanite-produced helmet, you'll need to die first to clear the old one. The ancients were very particular about making the right fashion choices.
Potion Effects
When repaired, the Potion Shop will sell a few select healing potions for 10 nanites each, and will additionally grant 10 minutes of one of 4 advanced potion effects: Haste, Fire Resistance, Jump Boost, and Strength. These effects are free, but you may only choose one at a time.
Minigames
Several of the buildings will contain minigames; this space will be updated with descriptions as they are unlocked.
Other Map Info
- The overworld map is 1000x1000, and was custom-generated by Bardidley.
- The city itself is a protected region, but the outer edges of the crater are open for building.
- Spawn is only protected down to 56y, so the area below is fully mineable/buildable.
- In order to make mining easier, the map was first generated in 1.16, then updated to 1.18. This means there are TWO diamond layers!
- The Nether will also be made available with a large, vanilla map. Be wary - the monsters here will be TOUGH! Your odds of being knocked into lava increase with every minute you remain...
- Several portals are repairable out beyond the crater's edge, with one more in Spawn which will be unlockable as a collective donation milestone.
- The End will not be available during this event.
Event Server Rules
- All global rules apply.
- No griefing or intentionally making the event experience worse for others.
- No hacking of any type.
