Donations

Many games and servers offer things like paid loot boxes to give the player buying them an advantage over everyone else. Some allow special ranks, privileges, or even staff positions to be purchased as well. Though our servers and gamemodes may have changed over the past 16 years, the core idea of Nerd.nu has not: that all players should be treated fairly and equally. Anyone can join our servers for the first time, without giving us a cent, and have the same experience as someone who’s been around for years and donated hundreds of dollars.

The hardware our servers run on does cost money, so once a year we hold a fundraiser to help pay for the next year’s costs. As is tradition, we will be donating 50% of the proceeds (before PayPal fees) to Child's Play. This charity provides toys, video games, and more to children in hospitals worldwide. If you are able to contribute, and believe that we have earned it, we greatly appreciate any amount you give. If you are not able to contribute, don’t worry about it! Just have fun at the event. Either way, visit https://nerd.nu/donate/ to see how much has been donated so far, and maybe make a donation of your own!

General Info

The theme for this year's fundraiser is: Capture the Flag! We're putting a new twist on an old classic thanks to the ArenaCTF plugin. The main variation this year is that teams are not permanent! Instead of one long round that spans the entire weekend, there will be a new round every 2 hours (which is also the time between server restarts.) Every round, the teams will be scrambled. You may find yourself on Blue for three rounds in a row, or you may end up alternating between Red and Blue. The plugin will balance teams as new players join, but as long as you stay online you will not be switched from one team to another. Individual flag capture and kill statistics will be tracked and displayed at the Spawn leaderboards.

The map, on the other hand, WILL persist between rounds. So you can keep building up your team's base knowing that you'll return to it in another round or two. There also many bonuses that can be unlocked for the whole server, see the table below for details.

Capture The Flag

Getting Started

When you first log in to the server, you will find yourself in a large Spawn room, full of Minigames warp signs, statistics leaderboards, and the usual rules. One one wall, you will find the warp sign to the CTF Arena.

Click this sign to join the CTF arena.

As long as there are at least 2 people that want to play, a round will begin. Players will randomly be assigned to either the Red or Blue teams, and will spawn at their respective spawn points. Chests may be placed, but cannot be locked.

Map and Non-PvP Zones

This map shows both teams' flags, as well as rough boundaries for the non-PVP zones.

The map was once again created by our good friend Bardidley. It features a large gorge down the center of the map, which separates the Red and Blue bases. Other than the flag capture zones and team spawn points, the entire map can be built on! You can bridge the gorge, you can tunnel through the dirt, anything goes! Ores are plumped, and there are many cave openings all throughout the land. Watch out for lava!

Near the North and South edges of the map (where the team spawns are), there is a non-PVP region for players who prefer to help their team out by mining and farming. This region stretches from -250x to 250x, which means the far corners of the map are still PVP zones.

Beds and Spawning

This is where the Red team will always spawn. Blue team spawns in a similar area on the other side of the map.

Note that beds are disabled inside the CTF arena, you will NOT be able to change your spawn. When you die inside the arena, you will always respawn at the original spawn point. Beds will still work in other minigame areas, but while inside the arena you will still only spawn at the team respawn point. Each spawn point is within the non-PVP region of the map, to prevent spawn camping. The spawn points are a small distance away from the flag. If you want to leave the arena and play some of our other minigames, type /leave. This will clear your inventory and place you back at Spawn. Note that due to the leaving mechanics of this plugin, disconnecting from the server and re-joining will still keep you in the arena, but will put you back at team spawn and may reset your inventory back to your initial starting gear. If you must disconnect, be sure to store important items in a chest!

Capturing Flags

Red Flag Capture Zone
Blue Flag Capture Zone

To capture the other team's flag, venture across the map to the enemy team's capture zone. This is one of the only places on the map where you cannot build. Standing anywhere inside the beacons will begin the capture process. A green bar will appear at the bottom of the screen if you are currently grabbing the flag, but watch out! It takes 5 seconds to capture the flag, and the other team can kill you here. Don't try to go it alone, bring some friends! When you are in possession, you will see colored particles swirling around you. If the flag carrier dies, disconnects, or leaves the arena, the flag will drop at their last location. Players from either team can touch the flag, which will either be immediately picked up by the capturing team so that they can keep running with it, or immediately returned if grabbed by the defending team. Bring the enemy flag back to your own team's capture zone to score a point!

Note that the leaderboard/scoring part of the plugin is not perfect, and flag captures aren't always registered to the team's total. Individual kills, flag captures, and K/D ratio are tracked as well, but the main goal of the event is to have fun!

Minigames

Mining

Each mine level gives a tool, and has a sign to deposit the requested block.

This minigame is open all weekend long. Built by Andromeda4210, each level of the mines has a target block you need to collect. There are also other 'junk' blocks that get in your way. Click the sign to grab a free helpful tool, and start digging! Right click the "Pay Here" sign with your blocks to deposit them. (The junk blocks can be dumped into the conveniently-placed lava.) When you collect enough blocks, clicking the "Pay Here" sign will warp you to the next level from then on. Upon completion of every 5th level, a new upgrade or bonus is unlocked in the CTF arena! Those bonuses will be listed here when unlocked. The mines will reset themselves after a period of time so that other players can continue to mine them.

Parkour

A section of the Rev 28 Parkour

This year, we have over 7 Parkour courses provided by ghrey303. Each one was an old Spawn Secret on PvE, going back to Rev 16. Many of these courses are equipped with the HubParkour plugin's pressure pads, which means you will be able to track your time and warp to checkpoints. Click the "Parkour Hub" sign in spawn, then look around and pick a course to try! Each course's warp sign has a difficulty rating below it.

Flop!

Flop: Hit the targets to knock down the other team!

This archery-based activity built by iceberg76 will first occur on Saturday. Watch this space for more information!

Thimble

Join us later on Friday evening (and again on Saturday!) for a rousing round or two of Thimble! This arena was build by Fluffhead555.

Opening on Sunday, this beautiful ice boat track was built by Za_Zaa.

Event Server Rules

  • All global rules apply.
  • No griefing or intentionally making the event experience worse for others. This includes:
    • -Don't try to indirectly kill players in the non-PVP zones on either end of the map.
    • -Don't completely surrounding your flag capture zone with blocks. It must be reachable by the other team.
    • -Don't grief the other team's PvE area (any builds in the PvP areas between -350z and 350z are fair game, though!)
    • -Don't grief your own base right before the round ends. You might end up on the same team again!
  • No hacking of any type.
